Week 4 Story: The Quarrel of the Dog and the Llama

Adam named all of the animals; he named the lions and tigers, the elephants and giraffes, and even the everyday dog and llama. He thought of unique names for each and every one of them. From the beginning, the dog and the llama have clicked. The dog provides the llama with company, and the llama provides the dog with protection and food in higher places. They have always been the best of friends.

However, a widespread drought hit the countryside one summer. There was no longer enough food. The dog and the llama were starving. The llama was losing a lot of weight and was no longer able to protect the dog from predators.

So the llama approached the dog one evening and said, "I think we need to split up. There is not enough food for us to survive together, but there is enough for each of us if we separate and find a new area to call home." The dog was so upset. He could not believe what the llama was saying. How am I going to survive without him, he thought. But he did not have an option, so they promised to stay apart and focus purely on survival.

The next morning, the llama and the dog parted ways. The dog headed north, and the llama headed south. The llama walked for a day and a half without food, but then he stumbled upon a shelter specifically for farm animals. He thought this would be perfect; he was sure they would accept him there.

So the llama walked into the backyard of the shelter and looked around. He did not see anyone, but he noticed a large hay bale that was calling his name. He walked over to the hay and began to eat. Shortly after, a large man came into the backyard and began yelling at him to get off his property. The llama quickly snagged another bite of hay and took off towards the gate.

Once the llama began walking again, he had lost all hope. He couldn't help thinking about the dog. How was he? Where was he? Is he still alive? All these questions he pondered.

Meanwhile, the dog only walked a few miles after he separated from the llama before a car drove up behind him. He heard the car door open and close, so he turned around. He noticed a man step out of the car, trying to approach him. At first the dog was scared, but the man seemed nice and he had a soft touch. The man called the dog towards the car, and let him in the backseat with two small children. Immediately, the dog felt like he was at home again.

The llama continued to walk down a dusty trail, and his thoughts were gradually becoming more and more negative. He thought he would never find a home. He walked for days; so many days, he lost count. Then he came upon a large farmhouse with a big stable and backyard. There was another hay bale in the middle of the pasture. He thought, I wonder if I should try that hay bale. Maybe they will let me stay if they know I am hungry.

So the llama walked to the hay and began eating. Soon after, a man came out. He yelled to the llama, but this time, he seemed friendly. The llama turned around with his ears alerted. The man walked towards the llama, and he was being followed by a dog.

As the man got closer, the llama and the dog both came to a realization. The dog ran towards the llama, barking with excitement and wagging his tail. The man noticed that the dog was incredibly happy they were united. So, the man allowed the llama to stay at the farm, and every morning the dog would go out to the pasture and run around with the llama. They never had to fight for food or protection again.

Author's Note:

The original story, "The Quarrel of the Cat and Dog," was written by Gertrude Landa in Jewish Fairy Tales and Legends. This story was about a dog and a cat who were always friends, until the winter came along. They were having trouble finding food to support both of them, so they decided to part. They promised to not cross paths again. The cat went to Adam's house to chase mice, but the dog went many nights without a home or food to eat. He wondered until he eventually ended up at Adam's house, although he did not know it was Adam's house when he first arrived. The cat found out, and she forced the dog to leave. She did not want the dog at Adam's house. So the dog left, and they did not agree on anything else ever again.

I did my own twist on this story. I changed the characters from a dog and a cat to a dog and a llama. I primarily chose a llama because I searched for unusual animal friends, and this was one of the pictures that popped up. I also changed the character that was so unhappy. I wanted to switch it from the original story, so I made the dog find the home faster and the llama wandered for several days. Then, I chose to change the ending because it was so unhappy. I decided to allow them to stay friends, regardless of their initial departure.

  1. Hey Arianna! I really liked your story about the Quarrel of the Dog and the Llama. After reading your story I thought it was a nice and happy ending and it left a warm fuzzy feeling in my heart. However, after reading your author’s note I am very happy that you decided to change the story so that it was a happy ending because the original ending is not happy at all.

  2. Hey Arianna! I loved this story. After reading the author's note you included, I love that you challenged yourself to not only change the types of animals, but also flip flop their roles and change the ending. Sometimes it's hard for me to even find one way to change a story, so it's inspiring to see that you could change so much! I'm glad that you changed the ending, it fit well with how you told the story and was much more positive. Great work!

  3. Hi Arianna,
I really enjoyed your twist on the the fairy tale about the cat and the mouse. When I read the original story, I felt so sad for the dog! So I love that you gave the dog the instantaneous happy ending, but you also gave the llama a happy ending after he learned his lesson. Very entertaining and great job!
